Portrait or Personal Image - Carl D Garrard

When I was young, I watched my Father make Photography a hobby of his own. I remember viewing his film slides with the family through a projector with curious admiration, only wishing that I could myself one day emulate his fantastic creations. Over the years since, I developed not only experience in film and digital photography, but also a keen interest and respect for all forms of it.

I did not truly dedicate myself to photography as an art form until early 2003, but have photographic experience starting in 1991.

The pursuit of both digital and film photography has taught me a great deal about patience, respect of nature, and the commitment to self expression. My subsequent increased respect for nature and my interaction with it has profoundly changed my life. Simply stated, photography introduced me to a different side of the world and experiences in a way that no other art form could have. For this gift, I am completely grateful.

I was born and raised in California, and I have a definitive admiration and respect for this state. No where else on earth can you go from the desert, to mountain peaks, to the sandy shores of the coastline all within a days drive. California in all its glorious beauty is slowly disappearing despite the courageous attempts by the loyal and caring folks for its preservation. In just a tick of geological time, California will be long overrun by industry, mankind, and natural geological evolution, and only then will photographs remain to remember it.

I believe that great photographs need no explanation, nor do they need a quote 'qualified critic'. Rare and challenging as great photographs may be, I am committed to pursuing them whether or not I ever make any. Photographs like music, seem to be a universal language we all speak fluently, and can have everlasting effects upon us.

I am always pushing my own creative limits and will continue to find new subjects and styles of expression at will. Progress, in all categories, is truly my greatest focus.

Photography can tell a story, conjure our deepest emotions, and it can educate us. Its simplicity at times is its greatest challenge, and can also be its' greatest triumph.

My website is always a work in progress, as well as a visual diary of my personal favorite work. It is also a dedication to the loving memory of my mother, Deanna.

I extend gratitude and thanks to those who have helped me along my journey, and to those who visit my website.

-C.Garrard
